George Michael Dead At 53 – The World In Shock – Full Video Report #RIPGeorgeMichael
Another big one is dead. In a year where we lost Glenn Frey of the Eagles and David Bowie in January, Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire in February, Beatles’ producer George Martin and ELP’s Keith Emerson in March, Prince in April, Leonard Cohen and Leon Russel in November, and this month Greg Lake of ELP and Rick Parfitt of Status Quo and Rick we lost yesterday. Remember that’s just a small fraction of all the rockers that we lost.
George Michael’s publicist told the press that the singer died today – Christmas day. Police say they are treating the death as unexplained but there were no suspicious circumstances. We should know more after an autopsy.
Michael’s publicist said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”
Elton John was one of the first to react saying, “I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend – the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.” The two were friends and shared a hit single together when the pair covered Elton’s ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me.”
Michael was born in north London. His dad was a restaurateur and his mom was a dancer. He met his Wham partner Andrew Ridgeley in his early teens. They both had a plan which first turned into a ska band called The Executive.
With Wham with 1984 album ‘Make it Big’ with the hits, ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,’ ‘Careless Whisper,’ and ‘Everything She Wants.’ Also this time of the year we hear their huge Christmas hit, ‘Last Christmas.’
Michael really showed his greatness as a solo artist. Let’s remember he wrote those tunes, played many different instruments, arranged and produced. That album gave us 6 hits, ‘I Want Your Sex,’ ‘Faith,’ ‘Father Figure,”One More Try,’ ‘Monkey’ and ‘Kissing a Fool.’ The album ‘Faith’ sold over 25 million copies worldwide. Some of his other big hits include, ‘Jesus to a Child’ and ‘Fastlove.’
He did battle with drugs. In 2006 he pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs and was banned from driving. In 2008 the singer was cautioned for possession of class A drugs, including crack cocaine and there were a few other cases. – by John Beaudin
